Writing this for Lisa-Jo’s Five-Minute Friday.

I am not a risk-taker.

As a little girl playing with my cousins, I always acted as the safe person. The one who encouraged everyone else to obey the rules, not climb the trees, and not swing too high on the swing-set. I’ve never been comfortable with risk.

But I do believe God challenges us to take the risk, sometimes; to step outside our comfort zone, to accomplish the risky and impossible. And God will reward us for taking the risks that He gives us. As John Henry Newman said, “If we are intended for great ends, we are called to great hazards.”

For me, public speaking is risky business. Standing in front of people, with only memorized words in your head to give the audience, can be truly frightening. Thoughts of failure always are at the back of my mind. But these last two years, I’ve taken that risk, and God has blessed me with experiences and friends I would otherwise never have had.

I probably will never be one to take an unnecessary risk. But I will challenge myself to look for risks that are God-ordained and God-glorifying.

Your quote by Newman is an excellent choice for this topic and I love how you summarized your cautious risk tendencies to a person willing to take risks for the glory of God. Excellent free writing! 🙂
