I Miss…

…fixing my niece’s hair in her Mommy’s “bibbons.”

…hearing her say “Aunt Jessica?” over and over in her arch way.

…getting all wet giving Ruth her baths (and saying, “Tilt your head back, Ruth…look up at the ceiling, not the shampoo bottles!”)

…watching a movie with subtitles and taking frequent breaks because of Mary Kate’s crying.

…never playing all of Debussy’s “Golliwogg’s Cakewalk” because of a certain little girl hopping up on the piano bench.

…cuddling with my oldest niece before getting up in the morning, even though everyone else is awake.

Now I can understand Aunt Miranda’s tears in the movie “Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm” as she packs up Rebecca’s suitcase. I cried more than Mary does at bathtime, when their green car pulled out of the driveway.

And it’s amazing how a niece saying “I love you” for the first time can become the highlight of your entire year.
